Steve Stein brings thirty years of both litigation and mediation experience to the Levin Simes Kaiser & Gornick LLP team. He was named 2002 Mediator of the Year by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers’ Association, and is widely respected for his knowledge, skill, and integrity.
Steve’s experience includes cases involving medical issues, personal injury, product liability, toxic torts, and insurance matters.
A native of New York City, Steve graduated from City University of New York and received his law degree in 1966 from St. John’s University. After law school, he taught social studies at a junior high school on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
In 1969, Steve moved to Los Angeles, where he became a producer for the national public affairs series "The Advocates," which aired for five years on PBS.
In 1972, Steve joined a New York plaintiffs’ law firm, where he specialized in medical cases. He moved to San Francisco in 1979 and established a solo practice representing plaintiffs in personal injury matters. He joined Levin Simes Kaiser & Gornick LLP in 2003, in an "Of Counsel" capacity, with primary responsibility for legal, medical, and medical/legal issues for the firm’s pharmaceutical case dockets.
He is a member of the board of directors of the San Francisco Trial Lawyers and is an at-large board member of the Consumer Attorneys of California.

Mr. Canty’s practice is focused on products liability, consumer class actions and unfair business practices. After moving to California from the Midwest, Ms.Charley received her B.A. in Biology from Mills College in 1999. She went on to work as a scientist at UCSF while pursuing her J.D. at the University of San Francisco School of Law during the evenings. At USF, she participated in the Environmental Law Society, Equal Justice Society, and was an editor for the Journal of Law and Social Challenges.
In 2005, Ms. Charley was admitted to practice law in both California state court and the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. As an associate, Emily uses the combination of her science background and the law to focus on pharmaceutical product liability cases and general consumer protection suits.

In 2002 Ms. Biernier graduated with honors from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Political Science. In 2005 she received her Juris Doctorate from Golden Gate University School of Law where she was a Merit Scholar. In 2005 Ms. Biernier was admitted to practice in California. Shannon received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, with a minor in American Legal History. In 2005, she graduated with honors from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. While in law school, Shannon served as a law clerk for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was President of the Hastings Health Law organization.
